Reclaiming Your Identity Beyond Performance and Pressure

When Pressure Reveals What’s Rooted

6/12/26 | By Idina Cole

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to trust God with the instruction but struggle to trust Him with the outcome?

You've done your part:

You prayed.

You obeyed.

You took the steps forward.

You did what the Lord said...until.

There's this sudden urge to run ahead of God. It's pressure to prove you can do it. There's pressure coming from an unhealed wound that says you are capable.

And sometimes the pressure doesn't announce itself with panic or a crisis. Instead, it shows up as relentless, circling thoughts—thoughts that follow you into the evening and greet you before the sun comes up.

I recently found myself in this place, waking up in the middle of the night with concerns about family members swirling in my mind. At first, it sounded loving. I was thinking about how to help, guide, and support. But as I sat with those thoughts, I realized they were heavy with pressure.

Pressure reveals what we are truly carrying—and often, it reveals that we have picked up burdens that were never meant for us.

The Thoughts That Wouldn't Quiet Down

As I lay awake, the Holy Spirit gently interrupted, not with condemnation, but with awareness.

And He asked:

"What are you thinking about?"

Following the thread of those thoughts, I realized they all led to the same place:

responsibility.

I felt responsible to guide, to ensure things worked out, and to carry people toward transformation.

Then, the whisper came:

"That's not your job."

In that moment, I realized the pressure wasn’t coming from the situation; it was coming from me carrying something that belonged to God.

The Version of Me They Remember

As I continued sitting with the Lord, He took the conversation deeper. He reminded me that people often know us through old versions of ourselves. They know us through old experiences.

  • Old relationships.
  • Old seasons.
  • Old identities.

And then I heard it so clearly:

"They don't know you as My daughter."

That made me sit up almost with a sigh of relief, I realized I had been trying to carry past versions of myself with those who knew me when they saw me at my worst and the ones who saw me at me best.

I realized there was this subtle temptation hiding beneath the surface.

A temptation to prove.

  • To prove that I had changed.
  • To prove that God was working in my life.
  • To prove that what He had done was real.
  • To prove that I wasn't who I used to be.

But daughter identity doesn't require proof....

It requires agreement.

And that's when Psalm 139 spoke in my heart.

"I will praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made."

The Lord wouldn't let me rush past it.

He reminded me that I was knit together in my mother's womb.

That He formed me before fear had a chance to name me. Before rejection had a chance to shape me. Before performance had a chance to become a survival strategy. Before I started believing I needed to earn what He freely gave.

God knew me and He called me. He established my identity long before the world ever tried to define it.

And if God has already established who I am, why was I still trying to prove that I am?

Returning Instead of Carrying

The more I sat with Him, the more I realized this wasn't really about family. It wasn't about ministry, or opportunities that await.

It was about identity.

Because the old identity responds to pressure by carrying more.

More responsibility. More expectations, and perceived outcomes. I was carrying burdens that were never assigned for anyone to carry.

But daughters respond differently.

  • Daughters trust.
  • Daughters release.
  • Daughters remain.

I realized I had slowly drifted into responsibility for things God never asked me to carry. I felt responsible for the outcome and not my obedience.

Obedience belongs to me.

The outcome belongs to God.

That realization brought me back to a scripture that has carried me through so many seasons.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6

I had been leaning toward understanding trying to figure things out, anticipating outcomes, calculating possibilities, trying to carry what only God could carry.

The invitation to return isn't to work harder. The invitation is to trust.

The Outcome Was Never Mine

I began thinking about seasons of my life when God brought increase, when doors openend, opportunities appeared and things shifted. The increase was never my focus.

Alignment was.

When I was struggling at work years ago, I wasn't asking God for promotion. I just wanted relief from the opposition. I wanted peace.

So when I partnered with the Holy Spirit on every single phone call, that's when things started to change in my favor. What started out as opposition was an opportunity for God to get the glory.

I didn't control the outcome, the outcome was waiting for me through my obedience, through my partnership with the Holy Spirit, the results; a favorable outcome that came through alignment.

That's when opportunities increased, doors were opening, growth was evident; and suddenly I understood something I hadn't seen before. The reward of obedience isn't control. The reward of obedience is remaining aligned with God while He handles what only He can handle.

And that's when it all began to come together. When I am positioned as a daughter, partnered with the Holy Spirit on every thing that I do, the swirling thoughts were an opportunity for God to get the glory.

The old identity wanted to prove she was still capable of handling things on her own. But as a daughter, I can rest knowing that God has everything under control. I can surrender what doesn't belong to me and continue doing what I've been purposed to do.

Remaining in What Is Already True

One of the things I'm learning is that renewing the mind isn't something we do once. It's something we return to.

Because pressure has a voice.

  • Fear has a voice.
  • Old patterns have a voice.

And if we're not careful, we'll start agreeing with those voices without even realizing it.

That's why the Holy Spirit is such a gift.

He is our Helper.

He gently reveals what we're carrying and exposes the agreements we've made. He reminds us of what is true.

And leads us back:

  • Back to peace.
  • Back to trust.
  • Back to identity.
  • Back to the place where we remember who we already are.

Action Steps for Reclaiming Your Identity:

  1. Identify the Burden: Take a moment to list the specific areas where you feel the most pressure right now. Ask yourself, "Am I carrying responsibility for an outcome that only God can control?" Then, write it down and consciously release that item to Him.
  2. Practice Agreement: Instead of trying to prove who you are through your actions, spend 5 minutes each morning reading scriptures that affirm your identity in Christ (like Psalm 139). Agree with God’s definition of you rather than the world's or your past versions.
  3. Shift from Control to Trust: Choose one situation today where you would normally micromanage or worry. Intentionally step back, pray, and trust God with the outcome, focusing your energy on staying obedient and aligned instead.

A Gentle Return

Maybe you've been carrying something that was never yours to carry. Maybe you've been trying to manage an outcome, or striving to make things come together. Maybe you've been exhausted by the weight of responsibility and trying to hold something together that God never asked you to hold.

I want you to know something.

You haven't lost God.

You haven't missed Him.

And you haven't drifted too far.

You don't need to perform your way back into His presence.

You can return right now by simply agreeing with what is already true.

  • You are His daughter.
  • You are already known.
  • You are already loved.
  • You are already seen.

This invitation is to release more.

  • Release the pressure.
  • Release the outcome.

Release the responsibility that belongs to Him. And rest in the truth that your Father is already at work.

So take a deep breath.

Hand it back to Him.

And remain.

Because closeness is still available.

And so is peace.
